Maryland Opens Applications for Prekindergarten Expansion
(Below: An excerpt from Maryland State Department of Education Press Release)
The Maryland State Department of Education announced today that it is accepting applications for the Prekindergarten Expansion Grant.
The grant is made possible by the Prekindergarten Expansion Act of 2014 (Senate Bill 332), a statewide initiative that was a priority of the “Malley Administration led by Lt. Governor Anthony Brown. The program is designed to expand the access to half-day and full-day public prekindergarten for four-year-olds from families with household incomes at or below 300 percent of Federal Poverty Guidelines (FPG) for the school year 2014-2015. For example, the eligibility to 300 percent of the 2014 FPG is $71,550 for a family of four.
In addition, the initiative will fund additional Judith P. Hoyer Early Childhood Education Enhancement Programs (Judy Centers) in Maryland, which serve children at birth through 5 years of age. Also, the program encourages partnerships and matching funds to provide access to prekindergarten for more Maryland children, establishing a fund that can accept private funding.
“Through the Pre-K Expansion program, we’re encouraging local school districts and early childhood education providers to partner with area businesses, non-profits and foundations to establish, expand and enhance existing high-quality pre-K programs, providing increased access for more of Maryland’s children and families,” said Lt. Governor Anthony Brown. “Improving and expanding early childhood education is critical to closing the achievement gap and ensuring that all of our children have the opportunity to climb the ladder of opportunity towards success.”Read full document here
