Breaking Barriers: Mental Health and Care

On February 19, 2026, program providers gathered at the Maryland Head Start Association (MHSA) Health and Mental Health Cohort Networking Institute in Linthicum, Maryland, for a powerful roundtable discussion titled “Breaking Barriers: Mental Health and Care.” The session created space for honest dialogue, shared experiences, and practical strategies to better support children and families.

A smiling Black woman with dark braids in a bun, wearing colorful glasses and vibrant rectangular earrings, is dressed in a green top against a gray background.Panelist and IECMHSS Consultant Danequa Offei offered a meaningful reflection on her experience, sharing that she initially felt nervous stepping into the role. However, she quickly grounded herself in the reality that this work is what she does every day. By approaching the panel as she would a conversation with parents and providers, she was able to connect authentically and speak from both experience and compassion.

Danequa’s key takeaway from the discussion was the emotional weight often associated with the term “mental health,” especially when it relates to young children. Families may feel worry, uncertainty, or even self-doubt—questioning if they have done something wrong. Danequa emphasized the importance of meeting families where they are, creating a safe and supportive environment that reduces fear and stigma.

Her insight reinforces a vital message for providers: how we communicate about mental health matters. By leading with empathy, normalizing conversations, and offering reassurance, we can help families feel supported rather than judged.

As we continue this work, let us remain committed to breaking down barriers, fostering understanding, and building stronger connections with the families and communities we serve.
